Caring for Your End-Grain Cutting Boards
Your handcrafted end-grain cutting board from Versatile Trees Woodwork is built to last generations with proper care. Follow these simple guidelines to keep your board beautiful and functional for years to come.
Daily Care
- Wash immediately after use with warm, soapy water
- Dry thoroughly with a clean towel - never let it air dry wet
- Never soak your board or put it in the dishwasher
- Stand upright to allow both sides to air dry completely
Monthly Conditioning
- Apply a thin layer of food-safe mineral oil or specialized board conditioner
- Let the oil absorb for several hours or overnight
- Wipe away excess oil with a clean, dry cloth
- For heavy use boards, condition every 2-3 weeks
Deep Cleaning & Maintenance
- For odors: Scrub with coarse salt and half a lemon, then rinse and dry
- For stains: Make a paste with baking soda and water, scrub gently, rinse and dry
- Light sanding: If the surface becomes rough, lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper, then re-oil
Storage Tips
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area
- Avoid storing in damp cabinets or against walls
- Use both sides regularly to prevent warping
- Keep away from heat sources like stoves or dishwashers
What to Avoid
- Never put in the dishwasher or microwave
- Don't use harsh chemicals or bleach
- Avoid cutting acidic foods like citrus directly on the board for extended periods
- Don't use vegetable oils (they can go rancid)
